about

This song is not what you think it’s about.

Remember, the word “screwing” has multiple meanings. It was inspired by the story a (now deceased) friend told me after she had broken up with her longtime boyfriend. It seems that he had a secret heroin addiction (I had no idea!) and to feed it, he’d wait tables during the day, steal from the cash register, cop dope (as the hipsters say) and then wait tables at night to replenish the cash. As Steve Martin said in the movie All of Me, “Ah, good plan.” Here’s hoping he is doing well.

Truly.

Musically this is a riff that I’ve had for years but was unable to do anything interesting with it until now. For those who know his music, it’s obvious that the great Todd Trainer (Shellac/Rifle Sport/Brick Layer Cake) has influenced the song, as has, again, my pal Ben Weasel and his POV on using standard song structures to write music.

I love the roaring guitar sound and really dig the low end on this sucker. Hope you do, too.

lyrics

Another shot at redemption
Until you dig in the till
Then you scurry like a rabbit
to get your fill

Only Dena knew, what he was doing
Only she knew
who he was screwing

Another shot at redemption
If you can fill the sack
a shot at forgiveness
if you can put it all back

Only Dena knew, what he was doing
Only she knew
who he was screwing
