about
I was never a fan of reverb, thought it sounded cheesy and dated. I remember convincing talented AmRep audio engineer Tim Mac to leave it off our vocal tracks of the Mickey Finn recording of the album “Three on a Match.” In retrospect, I’m not sure of the accuracy of this memory or whether he did or not, but alas that’s what I recall, so it must be true.
Here’s a recording of the song Plasterfeet from that session.
Later, while engineering the college radio show MTV Alternative Nation: Left of the Dial, I used the same technique, along with massive compression, to achieve a really interesting, intimate vocal presence. Funny in retrospect to see folks like David Gedge of The Wedding Present at first be taken aback, then dig it.
Now?
Well now I love reverb and this song is a reflection of that new found romance. If you listen, you’ll hear vocals and drums that seem to have been recorded inside a cave along with distorted bass and minimalist guitars. Because I’ve made this sonic choice, and because I’m singing in almost a whisper, it’s hard not to think this track is influenced by The Jesus and Mary Chain. It’s not. I honestly have no real love for them and except for the initial impact of their original look and sound, find them fairly mundane.
Lyrically, “Have Some Fun (The Fall Has Begun)” is a song inspired by the early days of dating my wife Jackie. There were times when we lived in the Twin Cities, she in St. Paul, me in Minneapolis, that she would call and say “do you want to come over?” Well, I may be many things, but too dumb to accept an offer to hang out with my bestest pal is not one of them. What was a 15-20 minute drive from the old church (photo above) I lived in on 15th between Park and Portland (also where I recorded godheadSilo’s “Nutritious Treat” that later appeared on the Kill Rock Stars compilation Stars Kill Rock) to her place in St. Paul, took less than 10-minutes. I was young, my foot was heavy and, well, love was in the heavy summer air.
The odd thing is that the song has now taken on a second meaning, almost sinister, in my imagination. I can see two people behind the iron curtain, one telling the other that the life they knew is over, “and now the fall has begun.” I can’t explain where this came from. Likely too many spy novels.
lyrics
Do you want to come over
Do you want to have some fun
Summer's over my love
And now the fall has begun
I wish you'd come over
I think we could have some fun
Summer's over my love
And now the fall has begun
