about

This song was inspired by an unlikely source; a television interview conducted by actress Susan Sarandon. Her guest, singer David Bowie who, in regard to balancing youthful career aspirations with fatherhood said, “I keep remembering that there is a tomorrow.” Oddly enough, I heard it as “I keep remembering that there’s no tomorrow.” I thought this was an odd way to state a beautiful sentiment about parenthood. I then flipped it tell the story of a friend who ended their life. Same phrase, totally different interpretation.

Sonically the song is purposefully minimalist and quiet, so when the guitar interlude hits, with full backing band accompaniment, it has impact. If you listen on headphones, you’ll notice that the backing band is only on the right side. This is a nod to the recordings of the 1960’s (especially Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence”) which were meant to be mono, but when released in stereo, had severe panning of instrumentation. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I love it.

Finally, you’ll hear a sliding door open at the end of the song. My (cough) studio, really the kids playroom, is right next to the door to our back yard and my dog Hoover wanted to come back in the house. Hard to say “no” to the best dog in the world.

lyrics

He keeps remembering
That there's no tomorrow
It just occurred to him
That there's now tomorrow
There's just today

She's slowly sinking in
There's no tomorrow
It's slowly sinking in
There's no tomorrow

There's just today
